Building a Sustainable Future – A Look at our Roadmap
Every year on Earth Day, the global conversation often turns to what can be done to protect our planet. At Mauser Packaging Solutions, we are focused on what is being done.
Sustainability has always been a driving factor for our business, from pioneering reconditioning to scaling the use of recycled resin in industrial packaging. However, as we look toward the future, we recognize that transparency and concrete targets are the only ways to drive true industry-wide change.
Today, we are sharing a deeper look at our sustainability goals and highlighting a few specific initiatives, from waste audits to renewable energy and water reduction, that are bringing some of these goals to life.
Our Vision: The Targets That Drive Us
In our most recent Sustainability Report, we outlined a series of ambitious goals. These aren’t just aspirations; they are the benchmarks by which we measure our success. Some of our key targets include:
- Decarbonizing Operations: We are on a path to reduce our absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 20% by 2030—a goal we are already making significant strides toward.
- Design for the Future: We are committed to designing 100% of our products to be reusable or recyclable by 2030.
- Incorporating Recycled Content: We are working toward a minimum of 30% recycled plastic content across our plastic drums, IBCs, and small packaging portfolios by 2030.
- Reducing Water Usage: We are developing strategies to reduce water usage at our facilities located in high and extremely high water stress areas.
- Assessing waste streams: We are assessing waste streams and investigating strategies to reduce landfill disposal of waste.
From Strategy to Site: The Work in Progress
A goal is only as strong as the work being done to achieve it. To reach our targets, we are currently piloting several high-impact initiatives across our North American facilities. For example:
1. Redefining Waste Through Facility Audits
We have partnered with a third-party waste consulting group to perform waste audits at facilities. Starting with three select locations, the goal is simple, identify every opportunity to divert material from landfills.
While third-party insights are valuable, the real „secret sauce” is our people. Our employees are the experts on how materials move through our plants. In collaboration with the consulting group, team members are examining operational challenges and identifying opportunities to reduce the volume of waste generated and promote reuse and recycling where appropriate.
2. Powering Reliability with Renewable Energy
We are currently exploring solar energy and battery storage opportunities at select facilities. A cross-functional team from procurement, operations, and sustainability is also assessing how state and federal incentives can help accelerate the transition to cleaner electricity and support our Scope 2 emissions reduction goal.
For our customers, this means more than just a lower carbon footprint for the products they buy. It means long-term stability. Transitioning to renewable energy shields our business from price spikes and provides smoother energy performance, ensuring that our operational reliability remains second to none.
3. Reducing Water Usage through Reuse
Our reconditioning facilities continue to advance efforts to maximize reuse of water during the drum and IBC cleaning process. Through water recirculation, treatment, and process improvements, we are reducing freshwater use and wastewater generation while maintaining high quality and safety standards.
4. Increasing Recycled Content
Reducing reliance on virgin plastic is one of the most direct ways we can lower our environmental footprint and deliver measurable impact to our customers. This work is already translating into real-world solutions.
Recently, our Small Packaging business unit launched a new EZ STOR® Container (20 Liters) that reduces virgin plastic use by 50%, without compromising performance or durability. By aligning materials innovation with customer needs, we’re helping companies reduce their own environmental footprint.
Partnering for a Circular Future
Our goals are not just about us, they are also about helping our customers meet their sustainability targets. As we celebrate Earth Day, we invite you to explore the full details of our progress and our vision for the future.
